History of Thambuttegama Divisional Secretariat
Earlier People lived here and deserted this area due to shortage of food(karakolo saya,Beminitiya saya) and droughter. But as the tank here was enlargened to Maha Gama(a nqme given to Thambutthegama)converting to a prosperous village.
During the ruling of King Walagamba there were so many temples namely Galenbindunuwewa vihara ,Vedithilana gala vihara,Vedaragala vihara ,orugala vihara ,Nallachchiya rajamaha vihara,Heenukgala vihara . However Xcept for Nallachchiya rajamaha vihara all the others had been destroyed by Tamil inration plundering.
Consequent to construction of the railway line, this village gradually become a town by adding important resources to it like schools(Gamini Maha Vidyalaya), a dispensary,P D W Bungalow and a railway station.
